Forget standard textbooks! Today, my students stepped into the shoes of 19th-century railroad magnates to simulate the Great Race. As the Union Pacific and Central Pacific teams, they quickly learned that building a nation-spanning railway was a massive gamble. They had to navigate simulated mountain ranges, manage scarce timber, and make stressful budget choices at every turn. Watching them debate whether to take dangerous shortcuts for speed or pay extra for safer routes showed incredible critical thinking. Some didn't make it out alive! Our post-race debrief proved they truly understood the history, economics, and geography behind the historic achievement.

Middle school is the perfect age to look past the borders on a flat page and dive into active discovery. When students research different regions, cultures, and environments, they aren't just learning trivia—they are building a real bridge between the classroom and the global community. Today 6th grade started a learning about other countries and how they compare to the United States. Be on the lookout - this research is building towards a grand presentation on mapping and building their very own continents 🌎

Ever notice how The Walking Dead is basically the Protestant Reformation but with zombies? 🧟‍♂️ If you look at the themes of the breakdown of central authority, personal interpretation of survival, and violent ideological schisms, The Walking Dead mirrors the 16th-century Protestant Reformation in some incredible ways.

Students had a great time at the Rush Funplex on the I-Ready Incentive Trip followed by lunch at Pizza Street!

Baseball practice has been cancelled for this evening. Softball practice will now be from 4:00-5:00 pm in the old HS gym.

📣 Booster Club Meeting — September 15 at 6:00 p.m.
Everyone is welcome! We’d love to have more parents from both Grundy R-V and Newtown-Harris involved.
One of our goals this year is to have one parent from each school for each sport who can help us stay connected with the teams and make sure all of our athletes are taken care of. This could include coordinating pre-game snacks/meals (paid for by the Booster Club), communicating team needs, and helping us know where we can lend a hand.
We’ll also be discussing some new ideas for the year, including possible Booster Club scholarships for all graduating seniors and what those might look like.
You don’t have to take on a big job to be involved. We simply want more people, more ideas, and more ways to support all of our kids.

Reminder: The Grundy R-V Annual Proportionate Share & Nonpublic Services meeting will be held today, September 15th at 1:00 pm in the Elementary Art Room.

Our 6th graders stepped into the shoes of cartographers today to tackle a big question: How do you turn a round, 3D Earth into a flat, 2D map?

During the first week of school, our social studies students took a break from their normal routines to participate in some incredible team-building challenges. From building the tallest spaghetti tower to cup building with strings and rubber bands to finally surviving on an island surrounded by shark infested water, the energy was unmatched! But these activities are about so much more than just having fun. They are where real growth happens. Our students practiced: Trust: Leaning on each other to reach a common goal. Resilience: Trying again when their first plan didn't work. Inclusion: Ensuring every single voice on the team was heard. We are so proud of how our students stepped out of their comfort zones to lift each other up!

Did you know that after September 11, 2001, school children and families from Japan sent over 10,000 hand-folded origami cranes to Ground Zero? In Japanese culture, the paper crane is a deeply meaningful symbol of healing, recovery, and community resilience during a crisis. To commemorate this day our social studies students interviewed those directly affected and had engaged conversations about the impact of this day and the 2,977 lives lost. Through the patient and focused art of origami, we reflected on the strength of unity and the power of lifting each other up. Through the recreation of first responders badges we remember the ultimate sacrifice given to those around us.
